fring 3.40 –mashing up your social circles

We’ve been listening to what users of social media really want, and especially our community of fringsters and we came up with some new solutions mashing up all your separate communities of friends into one manageable, mobile interface via fring. It’s all happening in our new version 3.40 launching today.

A lot of people now have several social circles developing in parallel. From now on, fring lets you easily create one rich, dynamic profile for each of your contacts so you can see what anyone is up to at a glance, and interact via all your mutual social networks/services directly from one combined profile. It’s all happening on fring!

So what does it mean?
• No more multiple listings for the same friend!
• Viewing a fringster’s profile, you can see whether he’s currently available via fring, Skype or MSN, and other IM services.
• We “hint” you when a friend from your regular phone book or another social network like Skype, AIM etc is also a fringster so you can add them to your fring friend list and complete their personal profile.
• You can control how your fring world sees you! You can update your own fring profile photo, mood status and nick name

How do you do it?
• To merge together multiple contacts, follow these steps: In buddy list, select the user you want to merge > Go to “Manage buddies” –>  “Merge buddies” –> it will take you to your buddy list. Scroll down to other names for the same contact that you’d like to merge –> Click OK to check the box next to each –> Hit Save. You’re done :-)
• To update your profile click on Options–> Edit my profile–> Options–> and choose Update picture/ Update mood text/ Change nickname.
• When initially registering to fring, you will be alerted of all your GSM and social community friends who are already fringsters. Once you start using fring, we’ll let you know when other friends become fringsters by clicking Options –> Manage buddies –> Friend finder.

These new features currently work on all Symbian devices; Windows Mobile and iPhone are coming soon. Get your new version today.

A full feature- list for the new version can be found here.

Official press release is available here.

Have fun – and as always, let us know how the new unifying fring works for you!

I tried this version today and imediately started to merge multiple id’s of contacts. However, after saving they disappeared from my buddylist. How comes and more important, how do those lost contacts come back? Is it a temporary bug or has it to do with synchronisation? The contacts which disappeared from my list are my most frequent contacted!

I’m using fring and also nimbuzz because fring doesn’t have all the features the community needs.

I would like to have some more features and the main of them are:

    1. Show / Hide Offline contacts – Yes the Merge thing is great, but I have more different offline contacts, but the same one.

    2. Change status – Offline / Online / Invisible / Away / Busy…

    3. Emotion pictures – Some included smiles are welcome as well :) That would save a lot of time typing a message.

That’s all for now and then, if these will be included, fring will be #1 :)

    Thank you!

    Have fun!
    Arthur :)

    There are bugs in this.
Fring is showing me contacts online that clearly are not.
Some of them are Skype out contacts, who only have a mobile phone as their contact details. How can they show as online ?
How do I downgrade to a previous version ?

Is there a way to choose on which account do I want to chat/call (MSN calls suck, and so do Skype Chat…)?

    omri Reply:

If you merge 2 contacts you can then highlight the contact on your buddy list –> Call –> Skype/fring
For chat you can send a message and we broadcast it to the services you merged. The chat will continue on the service you got a reply to.

    Please clarify:
    1) What’s in menu “Save GSM contacts” stays for? What is the security level to keep it.. where?!
On what purposes you are going to use my buddies phone contacts – is it for your database to be sell lately to some Operators ads spam?
    2) How to downgrade to the previuos version, which was apparently more secure for myself?

    omri Reply:

    Hi Peter,

Once you complete your initial registration process, you’re given the option to allow fring to match current fringsters against your address book contacts in order to add them to your fring buddy list. In addition, fring gives you the option to have your phonebook contacts on file, in case one of them joins fring at some point in the future, in which case you receive a notification, suggesting you to add this contact to the fring buddy list.

If you choose not to allow fring to go through the matching process while going online for the first time, you always have the option to go back to the privacy settings, on fring, and disable this option, and vise versa.

*Keep in mind that fring uses this feature for your own benefit and to enrich your fring experience; fring doesn’t plan to sell any of the data provided by you. for full details check out our privacy policy at http://www.fring.com/privacy/

Once upgraded 3.40.19 on my Nokia E90, I lost yahoo messenger contacts (actually, I have only one). I unsubscribed from the service and tried to subsribe again and since then I only see a small “Subscribing” window for some time (perhaps the duration of life of the TCP socket) and then login window reappears. I cannot subscribe anymore. I set up a WiFi wireless network just to see that the problem is not in firewall settings of my GSM/EDGE provider and now I can confirm that the problem in fring itself. I also found an alternative yahoo IM client for S60 and checked that with it I can login without any problem from my mobile set with either EDGE or WiFi connection.

Is there any way to downgrade to a working version?
