New fring iPhone version with Push Notification

As recently announced by Apple, the new iPhone 3.0 software update has a great new feature- Push Notification. The Notification was created so dynamic applications such as fring, can keep running in the background even when you’re not logged on.

What does it do? When you log out of fring, it keeps you in “online” status so your buddies can contact you, and you can choose whether to respond to an alert notifying you that someone is trying to chat, call, send you files, etc.

How does it work? Whenever someone calls/chats you, you’ll receive a beep sound, as well as a pop-up window, telling you that your friend is trying to contact you. Once you click on that pop-up window, it’ll log you back into fring and take you straight to the relevant window.

How do you register? Push Notification is enabled by Apple itself; once you download the new version, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to enable this option for fring, click ‘enable‘ and you’re ready to go.

If you choose to temporarily disable this option you can simply click on ‘more‘ and then on ‘go offline‘; so once you log out of fring, Push Notification will be disabled, until next time you log in.

So go get the new version now and let us know what you think!

Note: If you’re using a prior firmware version (such as the 2.2) you can still use the ‘always on’ add on, released a few months ago.

For how much time the push notifications are enabled after I close the software?

Great – first time I’ve used push notifications, and in a few casual tests, seems to work well!

    Couple of questions:
    - Does it support every network?
    - Will it reliably keep you logged indefinitely – If I log into MSN somewhere else, presumably Fring gets logged out – will it try to login again if I log out of the other place, or do I have to manually open Fring and then close it again?

    Keep up the good work!

What do you mean by improved voice – does the SIP providers work better now?

Another question – what is the timeout to get signed out of Google Talk. I downloaded the new version and it works well, except it is unclear as to how long do I continue to get push notifications without logging back in?

How long does Fring keep you logged in?
Tweets take a long time to be delivered.
Can we please have some control over the alert sounds? Hearing a new message alert while you are in a chat is annoying, wasteful and irritating to those around you.

Skype push notification appears to work for roughly 15 minutes and then appears to disconnect – defeats the purpose since this won’t be reliable. IM+ has a similar issue with skype so perhaps it’s a skype limitation.

I think you forgot to add a settings tab. Why can’t I control the duration I am kept online after exiting the app? Some control of what data gets pushed (i.e. only pushing @ mentions as opposed to pushing every tweet received) is essential as well. It did not take long for me to delete this app from my phone after giving it a trial.

For me Skype is not working after 15 minutes or so. Nor does gtalk. Skype doesn’t show me online when I exit Fring, but have push noti enabled.
I think push noti is only usable if it keeps me logged in for weeks, not only for 15 minutes after the closing of the program. It would be very nice to get information about disconnect time from the settings. This time, anyway should be at least 1 months to have it usable.
    Thanks for the improvements,

It’s not a complicated code, it’s 6-8 hours depends on the volume of users and how our servers are coping with the volume of users at any given time.

The most important feature which would make fring
a true star would be a push notification of incoming gmail messages.
There is a gmail notifier in the Symbian version fo fring but none on the iPhone.
It is far more important to know you have email waiting for you than a fringing tweet…

The problem is not how long you stay connected (6 or 8 hours is not a problem but 24h would be nice) it’s to get a push notification for tell you are disconnected : in this case if you still need to be connected you just have to launch fring again.

I agree. It is frustrating not knowing if you are logged in to Fring or not. I use Fring because of the longer log in time of 6-8 hours. I communicated via skype and need to be connected on my iPhone through out the day. However, sometimes friends tell me that I’m not logged on.

There is no way for me to know when Fring logs me out of Skype. If this was corrected, I would love this app!

There is one MAJOR question that I have about this:

Does this mean that all login credentials must be passed down to Fring corporate and used on your servers to connect to our IM services?

This is quite a huge security difference from having fring on the handset make the connections itself, it means that, theoretically, anyone with access to the servers at Fring could listen in to anything anyone is talking about using fring.

I’m not so sure how good that makes me feel.

    [Reply]

    omri Reply:

If you look at how fring works you’ll learn that we keep your credentials on our servers and this is how it was way before the push notifications were introduced.
The credentials are kept encrypted and this is much better than transferring them every time you connect to fring.

No dial-pad? I can’t screen Google Voice calls with this, so I can’t even take a call to test it. Fix the login time and suddenly you guys are (as of this writing) the only app I’ve found that allows an iphone or ipod touch connected to wifi to receive SIP calls, so now Google voice is free, even on my cell. I know AT&T won’t allow Apple to offer apps that allow sip over EDGE or 3G, but I’m fine with that. Just gimme a dial-pad and longer login time. Really great app by the way – great work!

You guys don’t even have a customer service or support number to call so they can solve the problem. It seems like a scam the whole fring thing. If you guys do not solve my problem I will Dispute the charges on my credit card and report you to the FCC. Please contact me back

    Hello,
You can go into ’settings’ on your device ‘notification’ -> ‘fring’. Be sure to remove the notifications.
