File transfer X mobile (WiFi + 3G) = fringing freedom

We’ve been filing your feedback and waited eagerly for the day to let you know that we’ve unlocked one big iron gate…. You can now swap music, pictures, video clips and other files via fring over WiFi or 3G from mobile to mobile and mobile to PC! Its quick, reliable and of course free! No need for MMS, cable, Bluetooth or Infrared.

Please notice- file transfer is currently available from fring to fring, fring to MSN and vice versa, with more services to be included soon! Feedback on your mobile file sharing experiences is most appreciated!

And now onto otherwise earth shattering, but comparably ‘interesting’ updates…

Chat window 3.30

The new fring version 3.30 is also :
1. Multi-lingual – available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian & Chinese. It automatically installs in your handset’s default language unless you choose another language from the settings menu. See your local language blog for more details.
2. Chat enriched – with display features & icons to let you know when your buddy is typing, improved navigation between concurrent chats & more…(Chat shortcut! – Pressing the joystick in when selecting a buddy in the main screen opens the chat tab)
3. Downloadable here – for Nokia S60 handsets for now. We’ll keep you posted when available for everyone else.

[...] There is no reason why mobile IM and VoIP software should be any different than PC-based versions. Case in point: Today, mobile VoIP startup Fring is adding some new features to its mobile application, including file-swapping. Fring uses your cell phone’s data plan or WiFi connection to make free Internet calls. Like Skype, it charges a small fee to connect to landline and mobile phones that don’t have the Fring client. It also lets you IM and talk to people on Skype, MSN, ICQ, Twitter, Google Talk, Yahoo, AIM and any SIP network (like Gizmo). Fring’s IM now indicates when the person you are chatting with is typing. The big new feature, though, is file swapping. You can send music, videos, or documents from your cell phone to other Fring users or anyone on MSN Messenger through 3G GSM and Edge mobile data networks as well as over WiFi. [...]

This is a cool feature. It seems like Fring is pretty close to offering services similar to Pownce. All it needs to do now is provide profile information about other Fring users and a timeline of their activity.

    Hi guys,

I did find on the DotSIS forum the binary of Fring 3.24(16), install the old version is also a solution.

On my E90, automatically only GPRS work fine, for WiFi, I can’t use the predefined APN for WLAN, I need to go via the Search for WLAN, and then select my WiFi … this does work, a bit anoying but it works.

For make think more confused, I guess the Fring server yesterday was down for 1 or 2 hours making difficult to know where was the problem.

    e_lm_70

ps: A suggest to fring group: it would be nice to have here online the possibility to download also old versions.

pps: Even if first build of v3.30 is not perfect, FRING is the best software that you can install for free on your mobile phone. Fring VoIP quality is much better then strandard mobile phone call quality.

    The new Fring sucks!

When I start it, the software loads a list of the available access points. But when I try to connect to my Wifi network of choice (which I already had used before), it doesn’t connect but returns to the “Select your access point” screen.

The only way to connect is the “Search for WLAN” button. It makes me find exactly the same access point which Fring already had in it’s list as know access point.

That’s an uncomfortable workaround which only sometimes works.

Fring, please, update your access point feature!
