fring brings world’s first video calls to iPhone and iPod touch

And what a new year’s gift this is… the world’s first video calls over internet on the iPhone and iPod Touch!
fringsters with iPhones and iPod Touch (and selected Nokia devices as announced last week) can now see all their family and friends on fring and Skype this Holiday Season!

Right now iPhone and iPod touch users can receive and make fring and Skype video calls entirely over Internet connection (for free!) and see the person on the other end. When a front camera is placed on these, we’ll have two-way video calls available here too just as we do on all the supported Nokia devices.

Just download the new fring version now and see your family and friends on fring and Skype these holidays!

Your feedback and comments are welcome, as always.

doesn’t work on iphone! two iphones with this software always ALWAYS show the no video sign. Same wifi network, voice is no problem the video call just says no-video symbol. What special things do we need other than two iphones with this software??

    omri Reply:

it will not work with 2 iphones since none of them is broadcasting.

This is not clearly stated anywhere on the site. AND you’re telling me the guy that is on the video call at 1:00 in the video (who is wearing earphones and in public) is calling from a PC??

Even the video indicates mobile calling while out and about. This is very very misleading and frustrating.

    sultan Reply:

well my question is can we use the back camera of the i phone…i need a reply please

    CharonPDX Reply:

rwilson; The guy calling from public is likely using a funny device called a “laptop”. Or he could be using one of the *MANY* Android phones with a front-facing camera.

    Hey ppl,
Now skype doesnt work with Fring. So no more video chatting using skype contact. Could not do video chatting with gmail or yahoo ids either in iphone.

What kind of weird business decision made you develop this feature for a device which doesn’t even have a front camera, and leaving out videocall enabled devices such as the hugel popular Nokia E71 (and other similar devices). This is beyond me.

they do this because Iphone user is More . and only 1 version they have to release . and that version will work to all Iphone ,

    Morever Nokia Symbian s60 E-series

they will do but later , as market of E-series is less than Iphone .

    I use E90.E71 N97 ,

we will be really happy if it Updated with E-series Asap

(I don’t have an iPhone, and so I don’t know if there already is such an option) It seems like there should be an option to allow fring to use the iPhone camera for 2-day video. That would allow an iPhone user to show a remote user a document that they’re looking at (or other video feed). And, in a pinch, flipping the phone back and forth to have a video conversation wouldn’t be so bad (no worse than pressing an xmit button on a 2-way radio).

Great idea. But just open it up to two-way (but non face-to-face) video conferencing on the iPhone regardless of the fact that we don’t have a front facing camera on the iPhone yet.

Poster above said sight seeing tours would be possible then. There are many other options too.

In the long run you or a third party could make a front facing camera that docks into the dock port on the iPhone, enabling true face-to-face two way video conferencing. Or Apple could add it to a future iteration of the iPhone.

Either way just add two-way support now and see what happens…

Thought I was seeing things when I saw this! Sounds pretty amazing and serves to show up Apple for the complete idiots they are in not including a front camera on a supposedly 3g phone. I personally think they did it deliberately so all their followers will have to fork out yet another £450 next year when they upgrade yet again. Please make Symbian S60 v3 phones the next compatible.

    NOKIA E71 pleaaase!

i think its a great feature, and i can see why you release it for Iphone (its popular, it will make it to the news, and makes most people laugh who know the iphone doesnt have a front cam to make proper use of it lol), but E71 is one of the popular phones that could make full use of it. i have tested several other programs, but they want you to pay for it after a time and they do not work with popular skype.

i am a Nimbuzz (only for skype) and Slick user at the moment, but if you make this feature work, you clearly have a joker in your hands.

This does not work with the video… Only audio calls on the iPhone3G.. Not sure why video is not being sent through. There has to be a workaround with this. With Cydia and VOIP3G hack there has to be a way to be able to get this working on an iPhone. Let’s see who will be the first to come up with a solution.

This is awesome….but as i understand, i found another company by name damaka.com that had claimed video chat on iphone back in July 2009. Also, i recently downloaded a two way video chat application on my Android smarpthone from the android Market. The application is called Movicha.

I have tested it on both 3G and WiFi. Movicha.com also claims to offer 2-way live video on Windows Mobile, Symbian, and iPhone.
The one difference is I had pay US $1.00 for my application.

Great to see applications like Fring and Movicha….I am sick of getting stuck to my PC for video chat ….need some mobility -:)

Why do they claim they are the first to do mobile video? Are the looking for a cease and desist letter?

Much better quality, full motion 2-way video on mobile computers over 2.5G and 3G, let alone WiFi, has been around for many years.

I am glad Fring has finally joined the ranks with their product, but they should not be misleading.

    Cheers.

    @AlexG

true. fring brings one of the first valuable “carrier agnostic” video voip solutions over wifi, gprs, hsdpa to the masses; however, making it a truly first in class service. the only other available non-carrier video voip applications for the symbian os, or iphone, of which there are two in my familiarity, are proprietary and do not integrate the large body of skype users. fring’s integration of skype video calls makes their newest release truly “debuting.”

This is not a video call. This is a video broadcast to an iPhone! :D

A video call is two ways, not just one way. Come on. Please put your energy adding more Nokia models to your already great video version of Fring: E90, E71, 6120, etc.

Leave those stone age people at Apple and iPhone alone until they build something with a two-way camera. :D

I have a new 3G iPhone and have used Skpe for a while, successfully. I added Fring to my iPhone and was able to skpe my contacts. I can see them but they cannot see me – which I understand has to do with the iPhone not having the cam. So my wife wanted to do the same. She added Fring and it downloaded fine. But now neither of us can see the other. It’s like it is iPhone to iPhone. When one of us calls the other, now the error message is Can’t find phone on other side. Something like that. So it looks to me like only one of us can have the app on the iPhone and the other cannnot. If both have it, Fring must be looking iPhone to iPhone. Can anyone clarify?

I can’t tell if it’s just bad interface design or if it simply doesn’t work, but I’ve installed Fring on my iPhone and my wife’s iPhone and I can’t figure out how to make a video call. The Fring test calls went fine and I was told “everything is working.” But there’s simply no video call button available when I pull up her name from my Buddy list. I’ve consulted the iPhone instructions PDF and it was no help at all. It shows me buttons I’m supposed to be able to push that simply aren’t there in the app. WTF? I’m headed over to iTunes right now to leave a bad review and rate this app one star.
