fring for your iPhone – it’s a fringing world first!

Update: fring V1.0.4 is now officially available via the app store.

OK. So if you’re one of the first lucky *#@$%&s to get your hands on an iPhone, you just got even luckier. We’ve just made a special pre-release R&D version of fring for your iPhone – a mobile VoIP app publicly available for the iPhone, yep that’s a world-first! :-)

This special pre-release version of fring, developed in conjunction with the Holon Institute of Technology academic research labs is a direct response to iPhone users kicking our behind to get fring for their COOOOOL devices. Part of the objective here (besides getting you all excited with fring for iPhone) is to get feedback prior to release of the full-feature version and create a truly superb user experience for iPhone users. So feel free to let us know what you think (and be as honest as you like – we can take it! :-) )
More info on what you get and how to get it at the fringcubator (fring lab).
it’s fringing iPhone freedom!

    but… ;) the feedback..

-it takes a very long time to log on.

-also it would be much nicer if you could see your contacts by service.

-could the msn be turned when you turn the phone so you get the big keyboard?

-include an options tab, so you can customize the settings

-enable spyke on gprs/edge, i used it on my nokia and it works

-GREAT APP!!! Keep updating this! :D

Excellent work! I love it! It features a lot(!) of functionality. Especially love the VoIP dial-out options (SIP, Skype & Google Talk)

    Some remarks (because you asked):
    1. I didn’t get dialing to an MSN buddy to work… Call was disconnected on answer

    2. When the phone is in “stand-by” I don’t get notified of incoming audio call (tested with Google Talk audio call)

And of course there’s a whole lot of other things to improve. Mail me if you need a list.

    Keep up the good work!

Installed it and works well. I used it for Skype and it worked out of the box. Very impressed. There is a bit of delay on the call but sound quality is good.

Also Skype chat seems to work well. There is a minor bug in that the text in the ‘type’ window scrolls outside the ‘type’ area by a few pixels.

For the rest I can’t wait to use this app. Should be one of the killer apps for the iPhone, without doubt.

Excellent! A couple of “mini-bugs” to report:

    1) It does not remember the skype user, it is a pain to have to reenter them again and to wait for the buddy list to be downloaded (and then sometimes it does not download the complete list). Please cache the buddy list, and also please have an update option (since the buddies that are online are not always kept up to date).

    2) Audio through the headset does not work for me on my iphone.

Again: thank you for this wonderful application and I hope the bugs will be ironed out in the next version. GOOD JOB!!!

it would be good if you had a bit more connection features for sip (stun servers, etc.)… for example fring doesn’t seem to work with sipgate.de, which is something probably not sipgate-specific but rather a lack of features or a configuration error on my part.

other than that, i don’t get buddy names for most of my icq buddies. that should be fixed, as well as an option to rename buddies to their real name (either automatic (like msn/icq/aim database) or manually)…

oh yeah, and i’d like a feature to have multiple accounts of one service and being able to disconnect and reconnect without having to retype my password.

thanks for the great app, those are just some beta bugs

    Feedback:

-Give me an option to turn off that crazy annoying pinging sound for an incoming chat. Subscribing to twitter has that thing going off constantly. It makes me stabbity.

-So ’subscribing’ to my AIM account kicks me off my AIM chat client on my PC (part of AIM not allowing concurrent client connections). SO I try and turn off AIM on fring and all I can do is unsubscribe. to reconnect I have to resubscribe and retype in my login. Of course, even though I’m unsubscribed my AIM contacts show up as offline. This is sorta FAIL.

    -Where’s the options tab?

-Needs contact groups, or at least a way to group them by service. And to not show offline contacts. this all in one big list is bad.

-The little fring ad that showed up in a GTalk message to a friend is sorta annoying. He said it only showed up once, but still. Not sure I really like that.

This app shows potential, but way too many little annoyances at this point for it to be useful to me.

It would be HUGELY helpful to have an indicator in the buddy list showing whether each buddy is voice capable or not. This should be based off of the metadata provided by the service (i.e., ping GTalk for user ‘foobar’ to see if ‘foobar’ is set up to handle VOIP or not. Without this, I can see myself trying to VOIP several users who are not able to receive VOIP calls.

First off, THANK YOU for making the first persistent chat app for the iPhone. No more having to deal with chat clients that disconnect when the phone is locked. Thank you so much for that.

Now, on to the nitty gritty.

I have no comment on the Skype portion of the program, as I have no desire to use it.

As for the chat portion, its stable, and works really well. However, there is one thing needed to bring the chat portion to prime time:

The “Twitter” and “AIM” clients are incapable of making calls. Yet selecting Twitter or an AIM buddy from the Buddy List, I have to THEN choose between “Call” and “Chat” options. This is a simple usability fix.

When try calling anyone, it quites to springboard. Also on receiving a call, the unit will ring, but then on answering, the unit will exit back to springboard. Overall reliability though is very very good and chatting via typing has been very satisifying.

    Here are some improvement:

1.The system should allow the user to save their username and password for each communities.
2.User should be able to subscribe and unsubscribe each communites without having to retype the username and password
    3. i’m using iphone 1.1.3. Fring seem to crash from time to time when starting up.
    4. Skype list of friend does not get updated when open fring. (if subscribed)
    5. should use differnt icon for differnt communities. this help distinguise which communities u are talking to.
    6. Fring take very long time to subscribe to the first communities (the server might be busy, not sure)
    7. fring should allow the phone call to be transfer to speaker.
    8. when trying to call friend using skype, there are funning tone in the sound. It might be because of the communication.

i’ll keep putting on comment when i got to play it more.

    Nice work guy

This time is about the “Good to have feature”

    Skypeout feature
    - Be able to display your current credit
    - Display your calling rate
    - Import your iPhone’s phonebook into the dial (seperate button for phonebook browse)
    - the + sign button should be able to let you choose which country you want to call and automatically fill in the country code for you. (most people don’t know the country code)
    - Be able to select your buddies and grab their phone number to make skypeout

    IM Feature
    - Use different Icon for different communites friends. Hard to tell is Skype or MSN user
    - Have personal information button added. This button should be added when user click the buddies. Currently only have Talk and Chat, should add personal info as well. This allow user to know who they are chatting with (hard to tell from nick name)

    Bugs
    - When Fring is running in the background, Sound help alert the user when someone is talking to you. But when user return to the fring it does not tell which user is talking to you. (add icon to the back of the name that tell user that the person is chatting with him/her)

I’ll post up more after trying more of it feature.

Hi guys! This little app is awesome! Finally a working VOIP application for iPhone.
Now that the core services are up and running, there’s still some minor adjustments to think about.

    - Add support for speaker
    - Let us customize the way buddies are listed and visualized
    - Add support for setting the status of each individual community (away/busy/online/invisible/…)
    - let us configure notification sound and volume
    - add bubble chat (like sms native application) or let us choose between plain, bubble or boxed (ping-pong style and standard)
    - fix issues between ipod playing music and Fring notifying an incoming event.

What I’m missing the most right now is the total lack of a settings page; having all the contacts listed in one big single list is a little unfriendly, since I can’t tell whether I’m chatting with “Tom” on GTalk or ICQ or MSN… There should at least be a way to group buddies according to their community. But since it’s a pre-release, I’m sure you guys are already working on user configurability.

I don’t seem to experience the issue where all sms are being deleted when using fring.

Great work, dudes! That’s THE application for iPhone.

In other words, it does for the iPhone what Skype does for computers. Technically, the service Fring offers is peer-to-peer Mobile VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol), and like Skype it requires that both parties first install the Fring client on their mobile phones. Ok, it looks like from all the testing, including a mate of mine who seems to be able to make voice communication with 1.1.3 iphone, that to use Fring in its beta stages, ones must update their iphone to 1.1.3.

I am on 1.1.2, and fring works stable, but unable to make voice communication.

The main difference between 1.1.2 and below iphone and 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 iphones is the user rights.

It seems that firmware 1.1.2 and below, all software is run as Root (admin super user). For firmware 1.1.3, and 1.1.4 in preparation for new official 3rd party applications, has changed the user to Mobile (user).

Please make exceptions for those using lower firmware iphones please, as there are benefits still from using older firmware.

Haha, .ppeixon, this is not really new news. I own the Nokia N93 that runs S60 3rd edition, and still after many updates, the volume of skype conversations is below that of a stadard telephone call. I fixed the problem bt using a bluetooth headset with the N93. It has an independent louder amplifier circuit, that lets me push up the volume of skype calls manually.

But.. since Bluetooth headset has not been implemented on the iphone fring, there will be not work arounds for this.

I can connect calls (with gizmo project for sip & with skype) but no audio either way.

If you guys could please support the ipod touch in your next release I know there is a very large group who would use it.
Feature requests include audio through the headphone jack, & integration with the touchmods mic. (visit touchmods.net for details, and to get an idea of how many ipod touch users are out there)
Thanks for the great product, keep up the good work, and please, include ipod touch support in your next release.

    Hey Guys at Fring,

Installed yesterday and it’s great. I’m on 1.1.4 and I’ve noticed some positive and some not so positives;):

    Positive:
    -Great Layout and interface
    -Seems stable and reliable
-Easy to use and quite perceptive
-Background usage is a great advantage
-Battery usage not so critical (so far)

    Not so positive:
-When connecting to Skype, takes forever to validate- on MSN is quite fast (perhaps nothing to do with you anyway)
-When connected, the Buddy list does not show anything else but the nickname…More info option is important…
-When connected to skype and switch to another Chat provider (e.g MSN) it shows as connected to both on the list but in reality only one is on.
-Phonecall quality is pretty good on MSN but minimal on Skype (again maybe not your problem
-It does not offer to remember usernames and passwords…have to re-type every time
-After using Fring I have noticed that all my SMS’s vanishes from my iPhone. (I believe this is the most serious issue, I’m sure all other have already been addressed or is being addressed by you guys)

Anyway, still for the first version, It’s great! I will definetly keep using it!

    Thank you all at Fring

Iterface, usablity, stability, connection – all excellent.

    But…

Call quality on Gtalk was not great. Dont think it was network related as the PC was working fine. Did not try most of the others.

Buddy list – HAS to tell us which app the buddy is from.

Multiple chats are not really supported well.

Ability to change visibility, block etc is non existant.

Otherwise its great! and hey! something is better than nothing – but this app has fantastic potential and i would love to see all of the suggestions passed on here implemented.

    2. It would be nice to have the buddies separated by service.

    3. If the phone is on silent mode, it will not vibrate when receiving a text/instant message.

    4. When text/instant message is received, the person who sent the text/instant message is placed at the top, when you tap on the name, it asks you whether you want to call or chat with the person, it would be nice if it just went straight to the chat option.

    Hey Guys,
Great app. I have to agree with Zibri (comment 57). I would prefer that the connections go straight to the servers. For example, I am trying to connect with SIP to my internal asterisk server on a private internal network. Entering the private IP or internal domain does not work as it must connect externally through your servers first… this is not good. For SIP, at least, it would dramatically improve performance on an internal server if it could connect locally. Thanks for all your hard work. I look forward to future versions!

I was wondering if you would consider adding an option which would unable the buddy contacts to be aranged according to the messenger program from which they originate. Sort of like a tab in the app for each messenger with the responding contacts in it. THANKS!!!

your app is awesome.I had been waiting for such a thing for a long time.
I have a few issues to report, though:
    1. The ringtones are too loud. Please do something about it.
    2. I have many friends who can’t use it because their phones (Sonyericson K810, samsung) can’t receive the application. Quite sad

    Furthermore, I have a question:
Pardon me if I’m too ignorant but, what do you guys gain from this?

Great app. Works great. Do I post feedback here? Anyway This is my feedback, I’m on 1.1.4 and have pre-release 0.978:

    - Love the interface, very nice!

    - Call Quality is great!

    – GUI while in a call; its nice but doesnt go with the overall theme of the iPhone.

    - Ability to let it run in the background when you tap the home button on iPhone would be great.

    - Would be good to have GPRS on Skype.

    - Takes ages to get the contact list and sometimes some do not show, fring test call comes up strainght away though.

    - Signing in can be a bit slow at times

Despite all these its a amazing app!!

2. Preference to not show offline contacts

    3. Possibility to send URL and to be able to click on these in chat

    4. Preference on sound events(choice of sounds, sound themes, different sounds for different IM-systems or contacts or contactgroups)

    5. Possibility to inhibit handover to edge in roaming environment

I think this beta version of Fring is a very good aproximation to what VOIP on a Iphone could be. But it lacks in some important functions: (maybe I am asking to much)

    1) Dialpad to use during a call (to mark extensions or use other options)
    2) Phone directory to store (SIP) numbers
    3) Option to dialing making pauses (“,”)
    4) Integration with the default “Contacts” application
    5) Call log (recived, placed, missed calls)
    6) store login and passwords to easely enable or disable accounts without config them again.

    Great app!!! Congrats!!

On business from US for 2 months in Europe with my iPhone and Blackberry. I removed ATT from my iPhone,
unlocked it via a single click on ZiPhone and inserted
    a cheap £15 T-Mobile chip – NO PROBLEMS and I’m a novice – the on-lines videos gave me confidence.
Still the iPhone with T-mobile chip would try to download
email which cost £ each day so I put the chip in my BB
which has no such problem. I conclude Apple messed up by not having an option to search WIFI before cell towers, or have an option to somehow prevent data
downloads. Anyway, fring came to the rescue, providing
SKYPE on my iPhone. Just downloaded following insructions (NO PROBLEMS) and called my wife over SKYPE and it actually worked, although I was walking around and it sometimes missed a word or so, or also when we both talked at once. However when I stood still near a strong WIFI hotspot it seemed much improved but still not the quality we’re used to but enough for me to get by when I can’t access SKYPE on my MacBook. Somehow, the Apple earphones don’t
work which threw me off as I used them 1st so as not to disturb anyone, and consequently assumed the test call
didn’t work. However when I went to lunch (leaving the earphones behind) I tried it w/o and presto, the test fring call worked great. Somehow the test Skype call just rings 11 times and quits? Good work, and I plan to use it more and trust some of the bugs will be worked out and the voice quality will improve. Excelent work!

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31149

    My suggestions:
    1. an option to disable the audio notifications or have them so that they do not stop my iPod everytime. I like to listen to music while I chat!
    2. grouping buddies by community/service type would be nice.
    3. Maybe this is a stretch, but having a visual prompt while Fring is hidden or when you’re in another chat, for incoming messages (like native SMS does)would be reeeeeeealy cool.
Keep up the good work guys! I love the this app!

The program is great, works excellen with icq aim msn but when i try to get a call from skype, it just closes.

I will leavi this comment as is first because this is a pre release so i’m pretty excited with this thing and works as a charm, A nice thing to do would be to separate the contacts from different services because all in the same list is a mess and a button or option to hide the offline contacts would be grat too.

    Keep up the good work!

Great work guys. I’m running fring on a 1.1.4 jailbroken ipod touch to chat with. Chat works good, but obviously I can’t make audio calls because the touch lacks the same hardware as the iphone (ie internal speaker and mic).

PLEASE, support the ipod touch (with touchmods mic for audio-in and headphones for audio out) in your next release. I know they are developing a SIP-VOIP program for Ipod Touch, but their program so far is sloppy and has little functionality, no chat, and very limited audio codec support.

Keep up the good work and support the ipod touch.

First off, let me say THANK YOU SO MUCH! for this app!! I would like to comment on what I like and also what bugs (no pun) me.

    1) it would be really nice to have the option to delete buddies off the buddy list. So far, your application is one of the most comprehensive in being able to add buddies, so it seems odd to not have the ability to remove them.

    2) I really like the ability to scroll up during a chat conversation and see previous exchanges between someone you are currently chatting with. It seems basic, but most web IM interfaces leave off this important featuer.

    3) Some way to differentiate between who is able to receive VOIP calls would be nice. I have several friends that use multiple programs ie: skype, AIM etc and it is hard to differentiate which service they are using based on the screen name alone.

    4) I really like the style of the keypad for dialing VOIP out, I like its similarity and size relative to the iphone keypad. One nice touch however would be to incorporate the tones when dialing (as with iphone’s keypad) just for aesthetics.

    5) Finally, I’m not sure if there is a way to do this, but I would be AWESOME if there was a way for you to tap into the iphone’s sensor to shut off the screen when put to your face during a VOIP call. This would save A TON of battery life, and since battery life is a concern when using VOIP apps on mobile devices, I would think you’d find this to be of much benefit.

Thanks again keep up the good work!

Couple of things though … could we get an icon displayed on the right hand side of the buddies list to show which community a buddy is from? Also voice calls when signed in over EDGE/GPRS would be awesome. It would also be great if fring turned the phone on and displayed that messages are waiting in a similar way to SMS. I have an application that displays a message icon next to the clock on my iPhone when I get an SMS. It would be great if fring could do this too and display message icons. Finally … vibrate! Could fring vibrate on receiving a message?

I was waiting for Skype on iPhone since day one. Great it is finally here! But there are definitely some problems to solve:

    - Voice Quality is sometimes very bad (stuttering transmission)
    - SMS deletion bug (I lost all my SMS twice in the meantime)
    - battery drain: When Fring is active, my battery is empty after 18 hours at the latest, if it is not, my phone lasts for three days.
    - Some calls just seem to end up in Nirwana, they just do not arrive at the adressee’s phone (input and output calls, as far as I can see).

Very nice program which lacks a few things.

First of all, why do you have to choose between the chat icon and call icon when youve tapped a friend on your buddy list? I think it would be much greater if you came to the chat view when you tapped a friend, and there from youve got a smaller icon, which when tapped called the the same buddy.

Tried the call function a couple days ago from Sweden to a friend in Japan with great success. This was via the msn protocol and only one time during the call i wasnt enable to hear what he was saying (probably cuz he got a bad internet connection)

Another thing that would be great is to be able to see the buddys picture picture, and be able to choose an own picture, change name, see the chosen name in chat view and not the “Me” name. Be able to change notification sound, but the caller sound is something i really like =).

Mabye see a little window in buddy-list view next into the friends name, that can tell if you have an ongoing conversation or not.

Another thing is to be able to see the friends email adress in the chat view, so if you have 2 friends called “Martin” you know whos who if you tap the friend.

And soon enough mabye be able to send and receive files and “webcam-chat” with the upcomming 3g iPhone =)

Appreciate all your work! Thanks for a very good program!

First, SkypeOut and SIP don’t work. I got connection but voice. Google Talk works though, abeit poorly with intermitten connection. Fring to Fring connection is best.

Second, there is no sound via the earphones while they are plugged in, which would be a pain for long conversations.

[...] If you are going to replace the previous version of the iPhone, it may be time to plan what to do with the old one. You could give it as a gift to a loved one or keep it as a backup phone. You could jailbreak it and use it as the world’s coolest Skype phone (note: you may soon be able to do this officially soon thanks to the SDK). Or, you could sell it on eBay. There are used iPhones going for around $300 on eBay right now (but probably less once the new version comes out). [...]

    Will Fring have this option?

What I like to see in Fring is a Jabber/XMPP client where you can point to a Jabber/XMPP server like openfire, rather than stick with the Google Talk server. Now I have to run something like iChabber.

i don’t know if they are program bug or something i do wrong since i could only try this alone…

first thing was about me seding messages to ppl i could see online… i could never get an answer back…
it looked strange to me and after few tries noticing it not working i tried to log in with messenger on a pc at home…
the fact is that the contacts i could see online there, were a lot different of the ones i could see on frinq…
on fring i could see about 3-4 contact online while on pc i could see at least 15 contact not busy…
after that i realized that, the fact ppl were not answering me could have been possible since there wasn’t also corrispondence with the “online” ppl.

Supported EDGE/GPRS calls would be cool. Either when GPRS is to slow, but for “SIGNAL CALLS” it it ok. You have a “normal tele number” on your mobile phone via VoIP. You see via CALLERID that a friend is calling on your “normal numer (German: Festnetz)”. SO you can call back via normale MOBILE FONE-FLAT.

SO EDGE/GPRS support will be cool. Option: Enable EDGE/GPRS Calls…

Hi I actually tried skype not for the phone service and all but for the chatting. The only problem I have with it is, whenever I receive a message sure it’ll ring but it won’t vibrate. Also It would be nice if there’s an option to turn on or off the ring when you receive a message other than toggling with the volume button which is kind of annoying. Also for AIM whenever a buddy who is not on my buddy list sends me a message, I will not be able to receive it on fring and fring will not notify me of a new message from someone not on my buddylist. so a general over view the fixes I’d like to point out in hope for

    Fix:
-options to enable/disable ring, vibrate, notification and etc.
-people not on the buddylist to be able to send you a message on the fring program (which apparently I have tested and does not work)
-Also the ability to edit (add/delete/rename/etc.) buddies for any account like AIM instead of just and only fring accounts

I hope these issues of mine can be issued and I hope I’m not the only one who wants these minor issues to be fixed. But generally for a start, well done.

    2. Arrange active conversations, sometimes I need to search my buddy from the list when I have a conversation with him already, and besides, if he changes his nickname, its quite confusing.

    3. Better call support in MSN and GTalk, so far ir’s been futile my attemps.

    Great work guys.

I installed fring via Installer.app on an iNdependence jailbroken iPhone, and have set up my Skype and iChat Communities.
I successfully made the fring test call, and saw all my Skype and AIM buddies in my buddy list, however on EXITing, the app hanged and then the phone crashed. Needed a hard reset, following which I opened up fring again.

It appeared to have remembered by Skype and AIM credentials (the tick was there), but the buddy list was empty. I then went through several iterations of unsubscribing and resubscribing before my credentials were accepted, getting the error message ‘Subscription Failed, please re-enter User-ID and Password’. After successfully resubscribing, my buddy lists were incomplete.

Am sure these are small bugs. In terms of functionality, what I would like to see is

-identify which community each buddy is from
-allow access to my iPhone’s contacts/addressbook for dialling out.

    Thanks guys!

This software is great! I’m a first time Fring user and using it on my iPhone.

I use it with my Skype and MSN accounts. And it’s great to be able to connect with my friends on both Communities but the major problems I have now are:

    1. I have situations where 1 person is repeated 3 times eg. Skype user, Phone number saved on Skype and MSN user and in most cases all three entries carry the same name. Problem is Fring for iPhone does not differentiate between Skype and MSN users.

    2. Call quality thru Skype can be quite clear but the delay can be very great. It’s ok for short calls perhaps but I can’t seem to use it for longer conversation.

    3. No file xfer yet.

    4. No change of status. eg Online; Away; Asleep; Gone Fishing; Dead. Ha ha!

Few other things but don’t get me wrong it’s a great software and despite these issues I still want to use it.

    Thanks to all at Fring!

Fring is an awesome applcation. It has everything which I would expect from an IM.

I use it for voice and text communucation over Google Talk (mostly) and Skype.

It works great with a slight problem. Sometimes, the voice breaks most of the times when speaking with someone at Google Talk. I know it’s not my internet connection as I use the same when I am talking with them through Google Talk itself on my laptop.

Still, I must say that you have done an excellent job writing this wonderful and all-in-one application. Kudos to your company and especially the team who is working behind the scenes.

    Thanks :)

On April 23rd I mentioned my experience unlocking my iPhone and using fring and Skype sucessfully. I also mentioned an unexpected byproduct of unlocking my iPhone was that the camera would take photos BUT not save them, some kind of photo directory permission that one could fix my ssh to the iPhone and changing directory permissions as I referenced in a link. However, it was not clear to me how to ssh to my iPhone so I’ve done w/o my camera.

Then, this morning I checked the Installer and downloaded a Free better camera application that has a timer etc. and presto, not only did the new camera app work, but also my regular iPhone camera app that came with my iPhone. I also tried the videocam app which seems to work fine, but it’s only free for the 1st 30 videos, and it fills up my 4GB iPhone memory quickly.
However, I’m glad to report my camera’s back in action and I just made a free Fring call to Sweden from the US and plan to make more calls using fring.

Yes, Fring is a great app. Unfortunately, it does not work on EDGE – it requires wifi or 3G. On the other hand, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO has declared that ONLY WIFI VOIP APPLICATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE APPLE STORE. So, if you want Fring on your iPhone 3G, you will have to downgrade to firmware 1.4. Yeah, blame it on Steve Jobs.

Great Job Guys, Simply amazing App. Now i can really stick it to my cell carrier. However, there are a few bugs.

    1. The volumn is very low, i dont know if this is to keep the bitrate low or not, but i can hardly hear someone on the other side, and vise versa.

    2. It doesn’t work with the headset plugged in. I tried making a call once, and i couldn’t hear a thing, not even on the test call.

    3. I’d love for a options button, with a few more options, such as colour scheme and such.

    4. Notice ring is extremely loud, when one has their headphones on listening to music. It’s ear peircing.

    Besides those, Amazing app!

This is a wonderful application which allows free voip calls and chatting. I would recommend one thing which I personally think would enhance the user experience a lot – Support for LANDSCAPE mode (iPhone version). I think that typing in landscape mode is at least 50% faster and more accurate than the portrait mode and this would make chatting a lot more pleasant.

    Keep up the excellent work.

Like what others say “it is indeed a killer app!”. However I have some suggestions for improvement to make. I tried to use the fring for the iphone for my IVR applications, however, after you make a call you won’t have a way to make ‘touch tones’ input. It would be a nice addition to the next Fring release to support touch tone during the call. Sometimes after making a call, it takes a while before you can make another call. And most of the time the call is terminated before it is completed. A speaker phone support would also be a nice addition to it.

Thank you so much for creating an applicaton like this!

Fring doesn’t cost you, but it will be charged from your service provider for internet usage. If you have unlimited interet, i dont find a reason for you to worry about using fring,.

    Cheers,

    Hey,

App seems quite good one. But when we get a call thro fring, when we didn’t open the app.. we are unable to attend it directly. If we answer the call, the fring app opens and it takes times to log in and there is the drawback.. it would b great if the fring team fixes this…

But for it, its the greatest app… hope to get a fix for this soon.

    Cheers,
    Len.

Please add iLBC Codec for calling in 3G and EDGE networks. If it does already exists may it possible to set it manually.

    Hi,
Unfortunately, the iPhone 3G model is no longer supported.
The current system requirements are: iPhone 3GS (or newer) running iOS 4 (or newer).
