Huge fring video calling uptake stressing capacity

Wow. What can we say… this is great !

Since adding 2-way video calling on iPhone 4 yesterday we have seen another huge jump in fring video calling.

As even more fringsters video call their friends on Android, Nokia and iPhones, we have seen some network ’stress’ (as the techies are telling me). So to free up capacity for more the fring-to-fring video calling, we are temporarily reducing support to 3rd –party Skype. Thanks for your patience.

fringsters, enjoy your video calling, and SEE you later

I though my fring installation was faulty … and I reinstalled the fring application a couple of times before I came across your less-than-transparent imo blog notice.

But if Skype is not brought back as a fring add-on, fring is a ‘dead duck’ for me. No patience, sorry fring. Wow indeed…

My network of contacts use fring, Skype and SIP and if Skype isn’t brought back I’ll use Gizmo5 for SIP and Skype Mobile for the rest. As easy as that, I think, even though I think fring (and the fring-concept) is indeed great stuff … at least until this Skype ‘temporary’ backtracking. Best, CeeBee

Where’s your computer fring download? PC to mobile video calls are what I need. Your website does not have a download for me to get fring for my wife’s pc so we can video call from my EVO to her computer at home. That feature was the only reason I got an EVO and you’re shooting yourself in the foot by isolating all your skype customers.

“Temporarily reducing support” for skype by completely disabling the most popular network of your fring WITHOUT ANY PRIOR or VISIBLE notice is hardly a customer friendly behaviour. Even your own site lists Skype as the first supported network, while you leave users scrambling for your blog to discover why their contacts disappeared.

If you have network problems, post a regular news update. This way you are only guaranteed to alienate your own user base. A definite THUMBS DOWN to your customer relations

This is your idea of notice to your customers? A blog post several clicks deep into your site? Fring, your interface is ugly, your features limited, your ability to do simple tasks is non-existent (can’t add a friend to a non-fring network without using a computer…wtf), and now you pull the only thing you had going for you… a crappy and ugly implementation of Skype video calling!!!

You should actually notify your customers of your intention to pull advertised services.

I can’t believe you didn’t consider the server load when the iPhone sold out in a few hours, has sold over 1.7 million units in a few days, and everyone has been clamoring for an open video calling solution! While I am sure you see the huge increase in activity to be a success, I see a huge amount of pissed off people ready to jump ship as soon as any other skype video service comes out. You will have spent money upgrading your systems just in time for all of your customers to bail.

    Very weak Fring.

There is no real point to Fring anymore without Skype. Most people have their friends on Skype because they can talk from computer to phone, phone to computer, phone to phone but the main problem is that if Fring has no computer client like Skype. IF Fring had a computer client you could video conference plus the application than that would be a different story.

I think you will learn a pretty good lesson about how to deal with your users. If Fringe video is taking too much, just reduce it. Turning off Skype support all-together and removing it from the application is obviously not explaining it. You could simply turn off Skype video support. I don’t buy your explanation. IMHO, you wanted to force Skype users to switch to Fring, but this bad publicity will teach a good lesson. Continue this for a week and you understand what I mean.

So let me get this straight. A new feature causes too much stress on your system. So rather than limit that new feature, you choose to screw over all the thousands of loyal users that came before and made you what you are?

Says a lot about what Fortune looks for in a company… not smart to alienate your primary customer base while attempting to woo a new one.

Also – and this is me speaking from my IT background – how could you NOT have anticipated the network usage spike? That’s the problem with video calls: lots of bandwidth usage.

Oh well… I guess I’m off to Nimbuzz in hopes they’re smart enough to capitalize on this humongous blunder.

    Cheers.

All I want to know is when will it be available for my phone which had a front video cam on it WAY before the iphone 4 was even thought of.

I was using Fring since Symbian and now I can’t believe that this company is that stupid to remove Skype support being the only provider for Android users like me.

Fring got popular in the 1st place for putting together different IM and Voice services, and know it seems they think anyone is interested on Fring itself… to assume such arrogant position a company has to be huge like Google, Microsoft, Apple and even Skype…

The post above about fring-to-fring video calls is a proof of such arrogancy, and if Fring doesn’t get real soon they will be crushed by competitors and their own prevoius users in no time!!!!

I’ll just bring my laptop with me to dinner on thanksgiving and use my skype address so I can talk to my family. This could have been a big thing especially for overseas military such as my self. Oh well, maybe you’ll learn your lesson about what your attempt and greed did. My grandmother barely has figured out her webcam, she’s not going to buy a smartphone, not to mention I don’t think she’d be able to understand it. I’m sure skype will figure out how to make its app make video calls eventually.

You can make it flash-based, for your website and ad-supported.
Without that I don’t need it. And neither do millions of potential users, who currently enjoy Skype. If your servers cannot handle traffic – build in distributed network capabilities for free calls (again, like Skype). If you cannot lead – follow, but make it better.
