Android User-Request-Version

Android fringsters, ever since launching video calling 2 months ago, you’ve sent us lots of ‘pointers’ about how we can improve the video calling service. Thank you! We hear you loud and clear.

And now, with this fring upgrade, you can hear and see each other even louder and clearer.

The newest Android version has
- significant audio improvements
- the echoing is fixed (fixed, fixed)
- supports new Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S using the front camera
- many more bugs fixes

Get the latest fring for Android and please continue to share your feedback with us.

Would be nice to have XMPP/Jabber support for multiple accounts, so we can use facebook chat for example…
And also the interface in landscape mode (when i use my physical keyboard) doesn’t allow enough chat lines.Lots of space is lost with interface and ads, it could be better organized…

Are there any plans to develop a fring product with video call VoIP support for PCs, now that Fring no longer interacts with Skype? There is a market out there, and regardless of who was responsible for the falling-out, that market will go to whichever company bridges the gap, unless y’all can overcome the disagreement.(Unfortunately, Skype has an exclusive with Verizon for smartphone Skype development, which does not help those of us with Sprint or other carriers, who like E.T. would like to call home. So they’ve already dropped the ball. Can fring pick it up?)

How come you guys don’t have a Windows and Mac version? The whole reason I was using the Skype plugin was to chat with people who are on their computers instead of smartphones at least some of the time.

If you guys don’t start on making even a basic PC version of your product, why are you guys so dismissive of the idea that when Skype produces a video chat capable iPhone app .. your app will see a hit to its growth rate? It reeks of overconfidence and arrogance in expecting that people will ditch PCs and stick to smartphones .. and besides guess what when the video calling version of the Skype smartphone app comes out users will have more choice so your plan to force people off PCs won’t necessarily work.

Just tested the latest fring version on my Samsung Intercept by Sprint Nextel. Fring test call results:

    1. As with previous version, I can hear the fring recorded message loud and clear

    2. Similar to previous version, I did not hear myself in the 10-second clip I recorded with the server.

    3. It does not give the option to use a specific connection for fring (i.e. cellular or wifi). So all calls go through cellular even when I am at starbucks where wifi is free and cellular signals are challenging.

Please fix this soon for android folks.

I can’t get Fring to work with video on my Android tablet, a Orphan M70003.

I get a message from Fring saying that “video calls are currently disabled on your phone due to device limitations”.

Any guesses on why? The tablet’s got a webcam and works just fine otherwise.

    [Reply]

    Tom Reply:

This device was not tested by fring and probably has a relatively slow CPU. You can try enabling video calls in the settings menu, but results might not be very good.

Thanks for the tip Tom! I could turn on video calls and I did even get a video screen when trying to make a call, but then the app shut down. All in all Fring seems to be a bit heavy for this machine. It has a VIA WM8505 600 mhz with 128MB RAM. Maybe that is too little? What should an Android have in order to run Fring smoothly?

    [Reply]

    Tom Reply:

fring should run smoothly on most Android devices, but in order to make video calls you’ll need to have a Snapdragon or other 1GIG processors.

Thanks Tom! You give me solid and great info here. I only wish I had known this before buying the tablet. :) Maybe you could put up some info about tech specs on the Fring site?

Fring with video however works just fine with for example my older Nokia 6120 Classic which has a 369MHz ARM11 CPU. Isn’t that pretty much the same CPU as in the Android tablet, which has a VIA WM8505 600 mhz?

    [Reply]

The list of all mobile devices that currently supported by fring can be seen at http://www.fring.com/download/default_PC.asp

    Hi Tom,
I am a subscriber of FringOut service, and I switched to Nexus S a week ago, and I am greatly disappointed in the performance of Fring on Nexus S. My image in video call is distorted and many a times video call does not even show my video to the called party. The video calls drop after 2-3 mins, and also the fringout service is really bad. There is nothing wrong in my phones microphone as I can make perfect calls through my skype, using phone’s microphone as well as hands free, but when it comes to fring, my voice is barely audible to other side, there is no way to merger my contacts, to navigate between chats and calls is really user UNfriendly, I used to use a Nokia E72 till now and I must say that fring worked really well on my Nokia… why did you come up with such a bad interface when it comes to such an important platform as android…. If fring cannot provide me with a better service I will make sure to terminate my account once my Fring out minuetes are over…. Please let me know, if you can provice a better update to fring with cure to the issues I raised.

    Thanks

    [Reply]

    Tom Reply:

    Hi Nitin.

First of all, I think your problems with the interface are due to the fact that you were using fring on the E72. The experience is very different and I also had the same problem when I switch from my good old N95 to an Android device. It took me a couple of days to get the hang of it but now I just don’t think I could leave without it. I’m sure it will be like that for you as well. The E72 and the SNS are two very different devices with different capabilities, I think you’ll agree.
Secondly, regarding the disconnections I suggest to try and use as much access points as possible to see if the problem is access point related. From my experience, most people that complain about disconnections will get back to us after a couple of days saying: “you were right, I tried connecting through a different access point and fring will not disconnect anymore”.

    Hope this answers your questions.
If you have any other questions I suggest to contact our support team directly.

    Hi,
    1. On your main Android menu press on ‘Settings’ -> ‘Applications’ -> ‘Manage Applications’ -> select ‘fring’ from the list -> ‘Clear Data’. This will erase your chat history and conversation history.
    2. We are aware of the issue and working to solve it in the near future.
    3. There is no way to rename contact at this stage.
    4. Currently this option is unavailable.
    5. We’ll take the suggestion into consideration. Currently, video chats are only available to other fring contacts.
    6. We discontinued our ‘fring Stream’ that allows Twitter & Facebook updates. But everything is possible, so we might bring it back someday.

    Hi,
On your main Android menu press on ‘Settings’ -> ‘Applications’ -> ‘Manage Applications’ -> select ‘fring’ from the list -> ‘Clear Data’. This will erase your chat history.

To remove a fring contact, simply push and hold the contact’s name and choose ‘Remove’.

    Hi,
Currently the video chat feature of fring is only available on devices with secondary cameras and requires a front facing camera.
