Smooth fring chatting on the iPodtouch
Update: fring V1.0.4 is now officially available via the app store.
Following the awesome success of fring on iPhone and the many users who also downloaded fring onto their iPod touch (even though it was not designed for it), you asked and we delivered: fring has been tweaked for smoother, better chat on the iPod touch! (using the iPhone version. lol)

Just like the original version created for the iPhone, this is the same special pre-release R&D version with some chat bugs fixed so now you can mobile internet chat & interact in fring-style on your iPod touch (I know I am stating the obvious but as there is no Microphone the iPod touch. it means no fring calls as well).
More info on what you get and how to get fring for iPhone & iPodtouch at the fringcubator (fring lab).

p.s. Thanks for your flood of requests pushing us to optimize fring for iPhone so it works better on the iPod touch too – please keep your suggestions and feedback coming! We love the challenge and our R&D team doesn’t really need to sleep anyway

Great! Had indeed some big problems, so i deleter fring, but i’m going to download it again now.
But isn’t it possible to make calls with the extra microphone you can connect to the touch – which you can but at a few places, or make one yourself – ?

I’ve been saying it since I first tried fring, I thought it was and is the best chat client available for any mobile device. Having tons of iPod touch users download and use it, even though they can’t use the VoIP feature just solidifies that even more. Keep up the great work guys!

There are and have been mics available for some time for the ipod touch, as well as working VOIP software for the touch. Fring offers a much better UI, as well as integrated skype and chat, which hands down beats the current VOIP software for the ipod touch. Unfortunately fring does not play nicely with SIP-VOIP app and neither work when both are installed. Please please please, modify the iphone version to accept audio input through external mic.

Yes, let me second the request for support for external microphones on the iPod touch. For $50 that would turn my girlfriend’s iPod Touch into a functioning Skype phone which she would LOVE. I’m serious, you would clean up if you added this feature. Hell, even charge for it… I would gladly pay!

Yes, like said above there is a mic for the ipod touch, and the is a software that enables sip-voip calls… I have the mic and I would love to be able to use fring with it to be able to skype, that would be absolutely awesome. I don’t believe it should be that hard to make since that app already exists (I think it is open source)

Please make fring compatible with the ipod touch, there are a lot of guys out there that have the mics

The mic by Ridax works only with 1.1.4, presently not with 2.0

Naturally, every iPod Touch user would like to convert their iPod to a VOIP phone. Many iTouch users purchased the iTouch since they have AT&T contract problems which require greater hardware costs or monthly service contracts for the iPhone 3G. Apple does not want people to hack an “end run” around the iPhone/AT&T alliance. Also nobody wants to dumbdown the iPod Touch software from 2.0 to 1.1.4 and lose the app store and apps. I do not know if there is a microphone blocking code in 2.0 but if there is a developer that can study it, I would like to know for academic reasons.

Apple store has had headphones with a mic for the Ipod touch second generation for a while now. They are not available to ship yet but they are there and they specifically say they will be used with audio recorders and such. Meaning the touch will have a Apple certified mic. Right now the Skype Out feature just disconnects when you try to use it on Ipod touch, but I imagine that will change once there is a mic from Apple available. You can actually make a SIP call on the touch even without the mic (or with an add on mic) but you can only listen to the phone on the other end (unless you have the mic, then I imagine it will work). I am not sure why Skype out gets automatic disconnect but SIP goes through. Whatever the reason we need to have Fring allow the Skype out call on the touch now that Apple has a headphone set with a mic for the second generation touch.

Sean,
As Arnie said, it looks like there’s no external microphone working on Ipod Touch 2.x software right now.
I had a touchdmods microphone which worked fine on the 1.x software and which is still working on an Iphone 3G.
So I guess Apple is currently blocking the microphone input in the latest firmware.
Hope this will change soon ! I can’t wait to make free calls using the awesome fring application !!

I bought this Philips external mic for the iPhone and used it with a 2nd Gen iPod touch and I was able to make free calls using fring. I didn’t have to do anything special to the iPod to get it to work. The 1st gen won’t work, but the new one will.

Hi,
Unfortunately you will not be able to make voice calls with the 1st generation iPod touch, only the second generation with the volume on the side.

Hey all just asking around. apple just realised or been out for awhile there apple earphone+mic+remote watevr it is.. anyways it has a mic and its compatiable with the 2ng gen iPod touch. now will it be compatible with fring since it works with the 2nd gen itouch read all about it on the apple page it shows how you can use voice notes with the ipod touch with it. so im thinking can it be used other for taking voice notes and just to say the ipod touch does support a mic input not the 1st gen though http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA850G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3NA&mco=Mjg5MTE4MA

I bought the $10 Philips iPhone Headphone Connector from Target (same as in post above; store only, can’t order online). Installed fring on my 2.2 iPod touch and configured with my Skype account. The test service worked great proving the microphone works! I did have problems dialing directly, getting an immediate “Call terminated”. But following the fring FAQs, I discovered you HAVE to prefix the phone number with a “+” (hold the zero key a little longer), then 1 and the area code.
Audio quality is not great, but it’s OK. The biggest problem was a perceptible lag in transmission. Incoming audio on the iPod was a little muted, but it was clear enough on both ends.
Other problems: adding a new buddy by phone contact crashes the application, it doesn’t sync direct# contacts I’ve created online, and it is very slow to connect to Skype (only) — often taking 60s.
But, I’m traveling to Costa Rica and I know my cell phone will not work there at all; so I’ll be interested to see how well this solution works.
Cheers!

There must be a better solution to get into Skype and make calls using the 1st GEN iTouch. Is the Philips i-phone headphone from Target the best microphone out there? I know there was a device that fit into the connector dongle that was a microphone. Had that been perfected?

I still can’t hear anything using fring and iPod touch 2g.
I can hear the end call tone but no sound through my earphones. Running ios4 on my second generation iPod touch. Other people are having same issues in the fring forum but no one seems to know an answer. Thanks in advance for any info.
