It’s here: fring for iPhone

We’ve been listening really closely to your input, suggestions & insights on the pre-release version and together with some supportive recommendations like “please code faster !!!” ;- ) we are happy to release fring for iPhone on the App Store (Supporting the iPhone and the new iPod touch devices).

We’ve added many new features to this version including ‘history tab’, ‘privacy settings’, ‘easy dialing from the main buddy list’ and many bug fixes.

This is a brand new, straight from the oven fring version (V1.0.1.4)  The pre-release version is no longer available.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

Have a great day

p.s  We highly appreciate your feedback and insights, so as always, keep them coming!

The fring team

    Awesome!!!!
I had been visiting Fring website almost everyday to check if the latest fring version for iPhone 3G came out or not! and surprisingly it did and I think that I am one of the first ones to see that and have already downloaded that!!!

(P.S. I checked fring website before leaving from work today at around 4ish and the status was ‘COMING SOON’ and surprisingly when I checked now around 5ish, I got it!!!)
    I am sooooo happy!

Can’t wait to try it but thought of writing my comment as you guys deserve this!
    Keep rocking!!!

Congratulations !!! this Application is super cool.

    But, I have a few problems/suggestions.

    1. Add a contact list sort option: first, last
    last, first

    2. Add option to manage contacts: Add/Delete contacts from list, Change contact’s screen name, Sort by groups.

    3. Will the Fring iPhone version be able to use the Facebook and Gmail API’s?

Thanks a lot Guys and Shana Tova.

Happy it finally made it. Only disappointment from using on symbian platform is that it is not running in the background, but that is Apple’s fault not fring. The one thing I think is lacking (same as all versions) is the ability to sign-out of specific services w/o unregistering. Eg. I’d like to be able to sign-out of everything but skype sometimes… other times I want google talk and AIM.

    Any plans for that feature?

    Hi,

I love this app. It really looks nice and was actually not expecting you guys would come up with 3G support since Apple would stop you from doing that. All great.

I have one feature in mind that I think will help lot of people sorting out their contacts. I have both MSN and Skype now activated through Fring. Lots of my contacts have both Skype and Fring account and of course I have them also added as a contact in my phone. They appear three times now.

    1) phone contact
    2) MSN contact
    3) Skype contact

Isn’t it possible to add the MSN and Skype contact to the phone contact or at least to assign the MSN and Skype contacts in Fring to the phone contact in the iPhone? Dragging and dropping a contact into the other is what I mean.

That way, I would have a complete list similar to my contact list.

    1. Able to see what account type the individual is from the buddy list.
    2. The ability to rename people (it’s hard for me to remember screen names.)

Again, thank you so much for putting the time and effort into this product to make sure it was high quality. It is well worth the wait!

This app is disappointing since it only runs over WiFi. You should have made it a jailbroken app! Also, if you try and call someone with Skype the call does not work. Sometimes you can use +1 or +001 or 001 and it will work but not all of the time.

Hello, and thank you for this amazing work!
    It works pretty well, but
    - Can you add a proper ‘accounts’ page : ability to edit login info for each of them without unregistering ?
    - Can you add status messages?
    - Can you add a button to change the status (like palringo does)
    - Can you add a favorites tab ? for the favorites contacts
    - Can you display a network icon next to the contacts ? i have many uplicated contacts, because i have them on diferent networks, and i need to click on each of them to see which netwirk i’d be calling
    - Can you add a way to sort by networks ?
    - Can you add a search bar for the contacts, and a alphabetical search bar (like apple’s phone.app letter bar on the right

    Thanks !

    Excellent app!
Few things for the wish list:
    * Remove the Skype Out button if Skype hasn’t been set up (I use a SIP connection – much cheaper).
    * Ability to sign out/change status of messenger without removing it as a module.
    * Improve contacts list – perhaps have tabs to separate msn, skype, phone etc contacts because the list gets very long and messy with several modules enabled!
    * Grey out SIP/Skype buttons when not on WiFi rather than leave it to the actual poi8nt of dialling before informing the user it won’t work over 3G (iPhone version).

    Cheers guys!

I am having the same problem as several others though: Skypeout won’t connect to any telephone number I dial. It sits for a second after I attempt to call and then immediately terminates the call. I have a lot of money on my Skype account so the problem isn’t with my balance. I hope this gets figured-out soon – I have been waiting on a Skyle app for the iPhone for a long time.

Love it. Thanks so much! No complaints. However just recommendations for next rev:

    * Separate contacts in list per network they are on.
    * I’ve already imported all my contacts into Skype from Address Book.app , so now there are dups in my list.
    * I’d like to be able to activate one or two clients, not all at once. (So just skype right now, then in a few minutes I can get online with AIM)

I think most of this is just separations. The functionality is there, just would like a couple fine tunes. I assume this all would happen anyways as changes are made and this version is just getting it out there.

    Thanks!

Skype Out calls are a problem on my iPhone. Many calls are immediately terminated. The ones that manage to go through have unusable voice quality. I’ve added + before the number and this worked once, and did not work another time (calling the same phone number). All these test calls were made while on wifi.

At this point I’m not impressed, but I’m hopeful for more improvements that will make this app useable.

Hi There. I have been using Fring for a while now – and really think it is a great app. After a Fring hiatus I have just downloaded Fring from the AppStore for my iPhone Edge 2.1 and made a test call over Wi-Fi. My test call was calling a NZ landline from an AU ADSL2+ Broadband connection.

The call went well with the other side reporting very good audio quality. One major thing that I noticed was the delay was much more significant than the delay using Skype on the PC over the same Wi-Fi connection. Can this be expected? And is this something that Fring is working on fixing, or is this a limitation of the processor in the iPhone?

A suggestion I have is the possibility to enter a HOME COUNTRY so that Fring automatically will enter country codes in front of phone numbers in your iPhone contacts directory that do not already have them in front of them. This would be very useful as most people do not enter in country codes when collecting phone numbers as they are not necessary for use with the iPhone. For example my home number in Melbourne on my phone is recorded as (03) 9273 XXXX, if the Fring app can add +61 before the number, and remove the leading 0 then this will be very handy and prevent users from having to manually edit their numbers in their iPhone contacts list.

Hope this helps and keep up the work on this excellent App. As much as Telcos are terrified – Mobile VOIP is the future!

I was very excited when Fring showed up — but a bit disappointed so far. Here are my issues:

    1) agree with above poster that some sort of favorites list should be available

    2) regardless of putting a + or 001 in front of the phone number, I still get 80-90% calls terminated before they even start when using skypeout. And I’ve never gotten one to work when dialing directly from contacts regardless of whether I put the + or 001 in the contact phone #.

    3) the “home country” idea is excellent

looking forward to the next update.

One think I noticed was when trying to use the Skype calling it wants the region code added before every call. For US it wants a +1 then the number. I added a +1 before he number in my contacts on my phone and it fixed it. If there was a way to have the +1 be added without having to modify all of my phone numbers adding a + before each number that would help a lot.

This is an awesome app and glad it is on the iphone. A few things to suggest as a user that would make this app even better is:

Support for speaker phone on the iphone.

    Support for a Bluetooth headset

    Edge/3G support if apple allows

Background running of app while phone is asleep if apple allows.

The ability to conference call on Skype.

Option to hide offline contacts and hide phone contacts.

For users who can’t login or having problems with user name and password, I noticed that this app auto capitalizes the user name in which it shouldn’t be capitalized. So try that as a fix.

    Thanks Russell

Recently I bought I-Touch (2nd generation) and installed Fring on it. Great concept. Awesome software. I can talk using gtalk anytime i want, as long as i am in wifi n/w. Works great for yahoo and Google chats.

In all great utility to have on I-Touch(2nd generation). You can use any 3rd party or Apple head-set with 3.5mm Jack which has Microphone input. (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA814LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MA&mco=MTY1ODAzNw). As this new I-touch has audio -IN port, Like I-phone in its std.35mm jack. You can use Gtalk and Skype for audio conferencing/ call making.

No need to Jail-Break your Itouch. You can still enjoy privileges of warranty.

Go to applications on I -touch. Search for Fring. It’s free. Install it on I-touch. Then go to Add-Ons and register to Skype. Once your account has been setup with Skype. Use I-touch as a phone… :-) …. works fabulous. I have done it myself.

You should have account with skype and should have bought 3$ a moth pack to make VOIP calls, calls are free for USA and Canada. Or 36$ yearly plan. You can also make international calls using Skype from I-Touch and quality is good.

I faced some Issues with Skype though. It takes Quite a long time to get registered to Skype through fring i.e through Add-Ons in fring. Call quality is good but not great. Also whenever i Launch Fring. I have to wait for at least couple of minutes before i could do Skype calls. Unlike Gtalk and yahoo…They get connected immediately after launching fring.

    Hi,

Congratulations !!! this Application is awesome!
    But, I have a few problems –

If you have successfully made a call and a robot answers asking you to press 1, 2, 3, etc., you can’t. Fring won’t allow you to send more numbers. It thinks you are trying to dial again and tells you that you can only have one outgoing voice call.

Please do fix this important issue, otherwise I wouldn`t be able to use my SIP account. I noticed lots of people have the same problem too.

Thanks. Hopefully you will come up with an upgrade.

If your having trouble with Fring, I have figured out how to get it to work with the ipod touch. First off, you need to have a plus sign in front of a number, I live in Saskatchewan and the area code is 306 so you have to dial a plus sign then a one then 306. The problem is Fring doesnt allow typing a plus sign in front. The Fring keypad shows a plus sign if you type a zero but that doesnt work.

What you have to do instead, is exit out of fring completely, go to your contacts list and add the phone number and name there. Then head back into Fring and the user will show up with a +1306, so from there it works fine. I’m sure Fring will fix this in future versions of the software, but for now you have to use the contacts section of OS X itself.

With an ipod touch you also need to get a headset with a microphone. I went to London Drugs and bought a TuneBuds mobile for iphone, even though I own a new ipod touch and it works great. I guess apple is coming out with one too, but I couldnt wait so I got this instead. I think older ipod touches might need a different headset with a adapter that plugs into the propreitary USB jack on the bottom of the phone.

Works great Fring and skype using wifi. You also have to have credits or a plan with Skype.

I have a SMC wifi skype phone but hated the fact it had no browser to surf or accept wifi connections at coffee shops and hotspots around town. With the Ipod touch/Fring/Skype I now finally have the tools to make calls. Awesome job guys!

I know that fring on IPhone does not support VOIP over the GPRS/UMTS network. This confuse me a lot since Nokia and Ericsson have the fring working on both GPRS and wifi. There is as well a patch out there that works for Jailbroken phones so yes it is possible. I do not want to Jailbrake my phone so why can you not release a version having this functionality then people would use your original software rather than a cracked one?

There need to be preferences to handle numbers with a +countrycode prefix.
That works for cellular calls, possibly for Skype, but not for SIP calls.
Thus there needs to be a preference what the + is to be replaced with, e.g. for a US SIP account it would be 011, for a german one, it would be 00, etc.
That preference also needs an exception for which country codes the plus prefix and country code are to be skipped, e.g. for a US SIP account it would be 1, since one rarely/never dials like an international call within the same country (although some SIP accounts support this).

How can I get Fring as an app bundle instead of through the iTunes store? We who run Linux have no way of running iTunes and can’t upgrade our phones to 2.0, and if we did, we would no longer be able to sync up our media players with our phones anyway, making our phones very expensive pieces of jewelry. I actually tried to run iTunes from inside a VMWare Windows VM, but it bluescreens horribly on me every time I connect the iPhone.

I’d appreciate it very much if you could reply to me via e-mail.

It shows promise but with no voice, we are stuck. Many after market microphones have been released. Please detect these so we can join in the movement.

    Hi Michael,

You’re trying to make a GSM call with your iPod touch. Obviously this option is not available on the touch since it’s not an iPhone and you don’t have a sim card.

What you *can* do is make calls to other Skype, fring, MSN (etc) users and make SkypeOut or SIP calls to other landlines.

Amazing Program!!! Really, this is a great thing. I use it for the iPhone, and there are no complaints from me with anything!

Two requests for skype-like phone calls:
    * Speaker Phone Capability
    * Other Phone Functions (Mute, Hold, 3-Way)

I know that you might be limited in some of these things, but if you could add them, that would be really awesome.

    Keep up the good work.

I’ve been using Fring for sometime now to talk with my google and for skype. Skypeout works great and skypein does, but I need to coordinate with the other party to make sure I have Fring up and skype is logged in.

To try to solve this, I use backgrounder to leave Fring running when I close it, but this only works about 25% of the time. On top of that, when Fring is closed, there is no way for me to know whether I missed a call or received a new message, unless I open Fring again.

In future releases, can you please include an option for a popup message like we get when we receive text messages to let us know when I Fring event has occurred. Also a way to keep Fring signed on so we can reliably receive skypein calls?

    Thanks

    Thank fring!!
Coolest app! I usually jailbreaked my iPhone just to get VoIP over 3G, but thanks to Fring I no longer need to do that!
    You’re awesome!

Fring is soooooooo much faster than the Skype app and better yet! Fring never crashes!!! Buttons and user input is much more responsive! Again…Great app!

Love how my Nickname and mood text shows on my msn account, so my contacts can see it.

iPhone notifications are great! Even if I close Fring I remain “online” to my friends, an receive notifications upon message arrivals.

    My suggestions would be:

    1. Group contacts by account

    2. Show/Sort msn contacts by email: Most of my friends have awful nicknames like “$$#__cool$33 (bah):-)” so you have to click on the contact to see to which email it belongs. So it would just be a lot easier to see the email right away.

    3. Save Add-ons login data: Ability to sign out from an account (Add-on) without having to input username and password next time you want to sign in. When I click on the add-on e.g. MSN Live it says “Are you sure you want to unsubscribe from this service?” and yes, it would log me out, but if I want to log on again I would have to provide my user data all over again. So please provide option to save this info.

Having this said……..Fring app it’s just the best!!

    thanks you guys!

When in a SIP call, you bring up the dial pad, there are no letters on the buttons. This is needed for dial by name directories, etc.

There is no unmerge of contacts who you have merged, or ordering the merged contacts. Now whenever I want to talk to one of my friends, it defaults to fring instead of google talk.

When I try to make a video call, it rings, then stops and my iphone client goes offline. So the video chat is quite unreliable so far.

SIP registrations are also VERY unreliable. I’ll check my fring registration in my pbx, or someone will call it, and it won’t be registered. Therefore no receive any of my phone calls.

Would be nice if you could access your phonebook in the phone when making a SIP call, instead of having to show all your address book in your buddy list.
