NBC’s Crusoe: Behind the scenes in the makeup trailer

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

So as mentioned before, this past week your local fring blogger got the chance of a lifetime, I went behind the scenes on the set of NBC’s Crusoe and even got to get down and dirty on set, playing a no good mutineer.

Playing an extra is no easy work and I soon learned just how long and hard extras have to work for a very small wage. However on the bright side I can report that it’s one of the best experiences that I have had in my short lifetime.

For this post I thought I would give you guys an exclusive behind the scenes sneak peak of the makeup trailer and how they take a perfectly good looking fringster and turn him into a sort of evil looking mutineer ;-)

I also attach a picture taken at the end of day another long day of filming. In the picture is your fring blogger (me) and the main actor who plays the role of Crusoe, Philip Winchester. Thanks for posing for a picture Philip, much appreciated ;-)

iPhone 3G spotted on the set of Crusoe

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Update: fring V1.0.4 is now officially available via the app store.

This past week has been one of action and adventure while working on the set of NBC’s new TV series Crusoe.

The very rare privilege to work along side an all star cast has been a fantastic experience and one that will stay with me for a long, long time to come.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I spotted something that caught my attention. Yes I must admit it was Mía Maestro, but what was that she was playing with (a little white and shiny techno gadget.) ‘Could that be a’.. ‘No not possible’, ‘its not available in South Africa yet?’ ‘mmm maybe’.. ‘Wait lets go and ask…’

‘Hi Mia is that what I think it is?’ “Yeah it’s an Appple iPhone 3G. “Come take a look at how cool it works.”

My jaw drops as I look at what is probably the first iPhone 3G on African soil. I had heard the iPhone 3G was coming in October 2008 and that it looked and worked brilliantly, but never before had I seen one in the real world, now while filming in the middle of nowhere, I got to see the iPhone 3G up close an personal.

“Do you mind if I take a picture of…. your iPhone?” I sheepishly asked. Mia chuckles a little, then comments “take a picture of my iPhone? haha yeah sure, why not?” I quickly gripped my trust Nokia N73, which by now had gathered enough sweat to steam up the entire set, having being tucked away under my pirate clothing (because for some reason there are no pockets in pirate clothing) I cleared the camera lens as best I can, trying not to get to any makeup on my phone and snapped a few pictures. Sadly though before I can get any other pictures it’s back to set for both of us, another round of filming is about to start. From my short encounter with the iPhone 3G I can say that it sure looks cool, but will it perform as good as it looks? Only time will tell.

I would like to quickly thank Mía for this very exclusive behind the scenes “hands on”  with the Apple iPhone 3G. It was great working with you on set Mia. Thank you for allowing me to snap a few pictures of your handset ;-)

NBC have finally released a preview of the upcoming TV series Crusoe.

The series which stars Philip Winchester, Tongayi Chirisa, Joaquim De Almeida, Sam Neill, Anna Walton, Jeremy Crutchley, Tertius Meintjies, Toni Caprari, Sean Bean and even your local fring blogger, is sure to be a smash hit when it premiers on October 17th.

However don’t take my word for it though, watch the preview and decide for yourself.

fring blogger gets dirty on the set of NBC’s Crusoe

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Back in May08 I reported about the new NBC TV series shooting on location in the garden route. The series which is based on a novel by Daniel Defoe, takes a whole new look at the life of Crusoe, played by Philip Winchester.

It is reported that the series of 13 episodes will premier on NBC October 17th and some great news for South African fringsters is that the SABC has purchased the rights to broadcast this series.

Most of the local sets have been closed to the public and getting pictures has been harder than expected, that was until Wednesday. What started out as an early morning trip to one of the “open”  sets to snap a few pictures for the fring blog, turned into a day of piracy and mutineering. I was soon dressed in the dirtiest clothing you have ever seen, make up check at around 9am and then off to the set. They had me playing the role of ‘Grant’ a crewman, mutineers and general extra. You know the guys doing all the hard work in the background ;-)

The day was filled with action, bombs blowing up within only a few feet. Mutineers screaming and allot of other hard work, like shifting props between set A and B or moving a boat between point A and B. When the director finally shouted “Thats a rap people” I was only to glad the day had come to an end, my feet were painfully soar and my body felt as if I had lived through a war and to my surprise I noticed it was 10pm already, a quick shuttle ride back to the dressing room, and I was back in my fring tshirt and regular clothing, all in all an amazing day. Which ended at 12:45pm when I finally got home.

I must say from only one short day on set, this new Crusoe TV series is going to be very exciting and I personally can’t wait to see the final product.  They have me scheduled to film today again and I am, looking forward to more Crusoe action.

Without further ado, I now bring you a very rare look at your fring blogger behind the scene’s on the set of NBC’s “Crusoe”.

(The reason for only a few shots is not to give away to much of the plot)
