New Twitter 2.0 add-on

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Hey guys

In line with your feedback and the phenomenal explosion of Twitter, we’ve just released an all new Twitter 2.0 Add-on for fring, with stacks of new features to excite your fingers and thumbs even more.

You can view other Twitter profiles, check-out your own followers and see who’s following you.

A new keyword search enables you to keep on top of a particular topic, and with our cool new look and feel and you can also open links like Tiny URL’s in your incoming Tweets.

Finally, something that loads of you have asked for, you can switch-off the beep sound when you receive Tweets, so it will just Twitter away silently without interrupting you every couple of seconds.

There are two ways to get your hands on the new Twitter 2.0 Add-on… If you have a Windows Mobile, just go to the Add-ons tab inside fring, unsubscribe from the old Twitter & re-subscribe to the new Add-on. And if you’re a Symbian handset owner, simply download the new fring version 3.37 first, unsubscribe from the old Twitter & re-subscribe to the new Add-on.

And there’s more…fring has also released the source code to the new Twitter 2.0 Add-on, and additional add-ons. Now, the web develop community can see fring API in action, re-use the code and mashup their own social experiences with fring.

For fring’s latest news, please follow us on Twitter.

Happy Tweeting and as always, let us know what you think!

Locate millions of free Wi-Fi hotspots today with new WeFi Add-on

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

fring’s new WeFi add-on provides you with easy and free access to millions of Wi-Fi hotspots straight from your mobile devices, saving you valuable time looking for somewhere to logon, and providing you with affordable internet access while traveling either locally or internationally, for business or leisure.

To get the new WeFi add-on on your Symbian or Windows Mobile Device, you’d need to download fring’s latest version here. In order to locate and access millions of hotspots in your area, simply subscribe to the WeFi add-on from the add-ons tab within fring and start locating Wi-Fi hotspot closest to you, automatically, using your handset’s GPS, or manually by typing in any address worldwide.

Developers can start creating their own add-on’s today by using fring’s developers site where they’ll find the fring API documentation, code samples and open source add-ons (twitter and last.fm) which they can use to leverage their current web expertise (e.g. PHP, .NET, Java) to create their own mobile internet applications using the same tools they’d use to create any web application.

Around The World For Free – The fringing extract

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Starting in New York City on September 18th 2007, Alex Boylan and Zsolt Luka started on the journey of a lifetime.

“Covering 159 days, 16 countries, 4 continents, and 45,000 miles, Around the World For Free follows Alex’s trek from New York City to the untouched lands of Dominica. From a deportation in India right into a war zone in Kenya, from the scorching deserts of Chile to the destitute poverty of Cambodia and beyond.”

During this amazing journey Alex and Zsolt made hundreds of new friends, saw amazing places and got to play with some exciting new technology.

After a stop over in South Africa the guys implemented the then newly launched fringME! widget onto their website. A Nokia N95 was provided by fring and away they went. Although life on the road was fast and furious and mobile internet connections somewhat slow and sometimes outright junk, the guys did not despair and made the regular effort to keep trying despite some difficulties they ran into, this early stage beta testing helped fring pave the way for revolutions in future technologies and for this the fring team would like to thank them.

Around the World for free has now been compiled into an 11hour TV series and is currently airing on WGN America.  We just received an exclusive fringy extract from episode 6 entitled ‘South African Kaleidoscope’ The full version of episode 6 will air on Monday evening 18/5/2009 at 9EST/9PST on WGN America.

The guys have also recently taken social media to the next level by implemented a live twitter feed during the show. During each episode of Around the world for free, followers of the twitter group can now interact with both Alex and Zsolt and get exclusive behind the scenes info during the show.
